Abstract The papers of William Michael Mathes (1936-2012), a historian and expert on Spain and Mexico, especially the Baja California Peninsula. The Mexican government awarded Mathes the Order of the Aztec Eagle in 1985. An alumnus of the University of Southern California, Mathes earned his Master of Arts in history from USC in 1962. This collection contains various handwritten record books and copies of legal and financial documents related to haciendas in Mexico, chiefly dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. The items concern a variety of topics including real estate, legal issues, boundary disputes, property and estate inventories, financial accounts reflecting income sources and debts, and issues related to indigenous peoples.
