Alexander von Humboldt colored lithographs
Scope and Contents
Collection consists of four color lithographs from von Humboldt’s 1813 book Vues des Cordillères, et monumens des peuples indigènes de l'Amérique. The lithographs depict indigenous peoples of Michoacan in their traditional dress, the Penipé Cordage Bridge, and a river raft near Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Biographical / Historical
Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a German scientific explorer and ethnographer who in 1799-1804 took a research trip through the Spanish colonies in the New World and encountered various peoples, cultures and social groups: missionary Native peoples in the Venezuelan rainforest, enslaved Africans on Cuba's sugar plantations, and a mixed race upper class in the capital of Mexico.
