ACT UP/Los Angeles picket sign collection

Abstract

The Walt Blumoff photographs, 1971-1975, include images of a school bus with religious text, the SPREE (Society of Pat Rocco Enlightened Enthusiasts) float in the 1974 Los Angeles Christopher Street West Parade, Ann Nobel receiving a SPREE award, assorted street protests, male nudes, gay gatherings, Harrison and Tyler performing on stage, the 1973 Gay Freedom Day in San Francisco, and the winners of the 1973 Groovy Stud contest.

Abstract

Clippings, news releases, flyers, newsletters, event calenders, articles, correspondence, photographs, negatives, organizational lists, meeting minutes, reports, and other material documenting the activity of the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee (CSLDC), 1970-1985. The Committee organized the first gay pride events in New York in 1970 to commemorate the Stonewall Riots of 1969. Many photographs of the pride parade may be found in folders dated 1971-1973.

Seven picket signs from the earliest public demonstrations in the United States advocating for gay and lesbian rights, organized by Frank Kameny and Barbara Gittings, among others. The original protests and subsequent "Annual Reminder" demonstrations were held in Washington, D.C., New York City, and Philadelphia from 1965-1969, and were attended by east coast members of the Mattachine Society, Janus Society, and Daughters of Bilitis.
