Administrative History

The Los Angeles March on Washington Committee formed in 1979, but after the national march in October, changed its name to the Los Angeles Committee for the March on Sacramento in response to a call for a march by the California Human Rights Advocates. The California March on Sacramento Statewide Steering Committee, Los Angeles Committee for the March on Sacramento, and other regional committees worked together to plan and facilitate the California March on Sacramento for Lesbian and Gay Rights on January 13, 1980. Demands of the marchers included the passage of employment protection legislation for lesbian and gay people, primarily through assembly bill AB-1, and the cessation of violence against lesbian and gay people in society. In February 1980, the Los Angeles committee changed its name to the March Committee for Gay and Lesbian Rights/Los Angeles.
