Buffalo Soldiers photographs

 Collection — Pamphlet-Binder: 1
Identifier: 7150

Scope and Contents

A collection of five photographs of African American Buffalo soldiers. One of the frequent assignments of Buffalo Soldiers was to assist the early frontiers of the Western United States. These African American soldiers contributed greatly to pathfinding, road and trail construction, building telegraph lines, and mapping out much of the frontier for homesteaders. The collection includes a photographic postcard depicting Buffalo Soldiers alongside white soldiers escorting a wagon train; a tintype of a Black soldier wearing his field hat and posing with three white civilians; a photograph of an all-Black regiment in a sketching class to learn the necessary skills of topographical survey; a photograph of a Buffalo Soldier in uniform and boots; and a stereoview showing a group of 14 African American Buffalo Soldiers in uniform. These photographs were likely taken before World War I, during the American Indian Wars or the U.S.-Mexican Border Wars.
