Scope and Contents

The LA as Subject Records is a collection of records pertaining to the creation and operation of LA as Subject. LA as Subject is a research alliance dedicated to preserving and providing access to materials related to the history of Los Angeles. Originally created as a project by the Getty Research Institute, LA as Subject now resides at the University of Southern California.

The LA as Subject Records is a predominantly textual collection created from 1996-2014 and is divided into seven series. Series One: Administrative Files is comprised of meeting minutes, meeting agendas, and committee rosters. Series Two: Archives Bazaar contains materials from the planning of and presentation of the Archives Bazaar, an annual LA as Subject event that takes place at the University of California Doheny Library. This includes planning documents, flyers, and posters. Series Three: Awards, contains awards received by LA as Subject. Series Four: Collaborations and Grant Funded Projects, contains materials about collaborative efforts between LA as Subject and other organizations. Series Five: Membership Files contain the files for all member organizations within LA as Subject. Biographical / Historical

LA as Subject was established in 1995 as a four year research project at the Getty Institute. The purpose of this research project was to compile a printed volume of archives and collections in the Los Angeles area. When the volume was released, an online database was also created, which has continued to be updated throughout the years, moving from the Getty to the University of Southern California in 2000. Once called the Archives Forum, the name changed to the LA as subject Advisory Forum in 1997 and again to the LA as Subject Archives Forum in 2004. The LA as Subject Archives Forum meets every two months at various LA as Subject membership institutions.

Every year LA as Subject holds the Archives Bazaar, a free and public event that showcases many of the archives and collections about Los Angeles History. It is convened at the University of Southern California Doheny Library each October.
