GH by Helmut Newton
Scope and Contents
Three 8 x 10" proof sheets by Helmut Newton. Helmut Newton photographed George Hurrell in his home in North Hollywood. Shots include poses in front of George Hurrell's famous posing screen that he used from the 1930's as a backdrop with his client stars. It was originally a 3 panel screen, however as of the mid 1950's only 2 panels survive, as shown. There are other photos of this screen in the Archive showing his children with Phyllis Bounds Hurrell posed in front of the then 3-panel screen. The screen was painted in the surrealistic style 'after Gregory DeChirico' that Hurrell loved..and that brought him the attention of Edgar Alwin Payne when Hurrell was a student at the Chicago Art Institute in the 1925. Another painting by Hurrell, A FISH FOR PANCHO is also painted in the surrealistic style. 10 11 x 14" portraits.
