Scope and Contents

Richard Nixon's presidency speeches and speaking engagements, events, and receptions subseries contains notes, typescripts, schedules, itineraries, clippings, photographs, correspondence, audiotapes, audiocassettes, and motion pictures, 1969-1973, collected, created, and used by Herbert G. Klein and his staff for the creation and delivery of Klein's speeches, and to organize and coordinate his multiple speaking engagements and the events and receptions he attended in the course of his official duties as White House Director of Communications. Included are Klein's handwritten notes for various speeches and public appearances; thank you letters; correspondence regarding both accepted and regretted invitations; audio (cassette and reel-to-reel) tapes of Klein and Nixon speeches and appearances as well as audio recordings of press conferences and remarks by other members of the Nixon administration; films of Klein appearances, primarily on Meet the Press and Face the Nation; travel and logistical information for Klein's speaking engagements and appearances; and notes and information for selected 1972 election appearances. A large number of Klein's speaking engagements were before members of Sigma Delta Chi, the national journalism society (referred to by Klein as "SDX"), and national and local broadcast and print journalism professional organizations.

Arrangement

This subseries is arranged by date and by location. Klein kept separate files for trip logistics and speaking engagements which have been collocated; while most were generally arranged by date, some were arranged by location (state), and this arrangement has been maintained.
