Ault was a member of the Gay Liberation Front in New York in the 1970s, co-founder of the 1979 March on Washington, and board member of the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center in New York in the 1980s.

The majority of the materials, including photographs and text panels, were part of the 2009 exhibition "Queer Culture: The Photographs of A.J. Epstein." Wilson was a pioneer of the alternative theater movement in New York during the early 1960s, and in 1974, he co-founded The Other Side of Silence (TOSOS), the first professional gay theater company in New York City.
