Lion Feuchtwanger (1884-1958) was a celebrated German-Jewish novelist and outspoken enemy of the Nazis. He began his literary career as a theater critic and turned his talent to writing plays in the 1910s and 1920s. Friedrich (Frederick) Hacker was a distinguished psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and cultural figure. Born in Vienna in 1914, Hacker left Austria soon after the Anschluss and made his way to Los Angeles via New York and Topeka, Kansas.
