Biographical / Historical
LGTV started out as a public access television show in the early 1990s in Providence, Rhode Island. This LGBT magazine style television show originally was conceived by two lesbian women and was enacted by a group of volunteers. LGTV originally aired in Providence, but after a slot opened up in the statewide programming LGTV was broadcasted throughout Rhode Island.
The group behind LGTV covered any LGBT event happening within the state but also managed to secure press passes to national events like the 1993 March on Washington or the Lighten Up! comedy show in New York City. They also conducted interviews on subjects important to their audience and had a monthly calendar of events. LGTV had various segments and included segments shot outside of the studio. One episode included on-location segments of the AIDS Memorial Quilt exhibition at Rhode Island College, a demonstration at the Mapplethorpe exhibit at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, the picketing of Brad Gorham and Arthur Read's law offices, and interviews with gay men and residents of Providence about local news.
