Scope and Content

The collection primarily consists of photographs of John V. Shinn and Martin Bloch's travels in California during June 1950. Shinn and Bloch visited an unidentified beach, the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, Muir Woods, Sausalito, Joel Disher in San Jose, Sequoia National Park, and Gilroy, California. The collection also includes four other photographs, one at a beach house, one interior with Shinn, and two of Shinn at a desk. One of the images of Shinn at a desk is of Shinn shaking hands with an unknown person at the Lincoln Mercury Corporate office.

Biographical Note

John V. Shinn received his bachelor of arts from Harvard University and his masters of science from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. While living on the East coast he worked for newspapers, a national press service, and two major broadcasters before relocating to California. In California he worked for Aerojet Engineering Corporation in Azusa and from May 1949 the Lincoln-Mercury Corporation in Los Angles. He served as the editor of the employee newspaper, the Lincoln-Mercury NEWS, through December 1950. He was admitted to the University of Paris as a doctoral candidate in European history and government.

Abstract

The collection consists of photographs and two issues of Lincoln-Mercury News. John V. Shinn and Martin Block photographed their travels in California during June 1950. The collection also contains four other photographs of Shinn. Shinn served as editor of the Lincoln-Mercury News, 1949-1950.
