Scope and Contents

The collection comprises the constitution, bylaws, meeting minutes, correspondence, flyers, event programs, questionnaires, membership lists, and a photograph, 1972-1983, from Kingmasters in Los Angeles. Included are correspondence from former Kingmaster president, Lee Leonard, and event flyers from Kingmaster-sponsored events, including its annual installation of officers, anniversary shows, Thanksgiving "Turkey Shoot," banquets, beer busts, beauty contests, and other charity events.

Administrative History

Founded on July 29, 1971, Kingmasters was a gay men's social group in Los Angeles formed to promote fraternity between organizations and the community in general with an emphasis on charitable work. Membership was restricted to gay men and included an elected board of Kingmasters officers. The organization met on a weekly basis and regularly organized events and social gatherings with leather, motorcycle, and western themes. Kingmasters also encouraged members to organize fundraising events for other organizations such as the Gay Community Services Center, HELP Inc., and the Metropolitan Community Church.
