Scope and Contents

The collection comprises correspondence, meeting minutes, clippings, and legal papers, 1949-1990, from Henry S. Glazier. The bulk of the materials document Glazier's involvement in the Jewish Big Brothers and the Big Brothers of America and his appeal in the 1970s to change its policy on banning gay men from membership. The collection also includes appeal letters Glazier sent to several New York organizations and academic institutions urging for anti-discrimination policies regarding homosexuals; and photocopies of gay-related legal documents sent out by the New York Civil Liberties Union.

Biography

Henry S. Glazier, Jr., graduated from the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1928, and later attended the Collegiate School in New York City, New York. During World War II, he served in the United States Air Force.

Following the war, he became active in the Jewish Big Brothers of the Jewish Board of Guardians, where he served as chairman from 1949-1951. He then became director of Big Brothers of America, and also served on its executive committee.

From the 1960s through the 1980s, Glazier was trustee of the Glazier Family Foundation.
