Administrative History

The Santa Barbara Coalition for Human Rights (SBCHR) was an organization that advocated for a variety of human rights issues, including, but not limited to, gay and lesbian rights. The SBCHR formed in 1978 to defeat California Proposition 6, also known as the Briggs Initiative, that would have mandated the firing of gay and lesbian public school teachers and schoolworkers. After the defeat of the Briggs Initiative, the SBCHR primarily focused its activities on advocating for gay and lesbian rights ordinances in the Santa Barbara and Ventura County areas. It was also involved in other progressive causes and activism at the state level.
