Biography

Valerie Johnson is a high school teacher in fine arts photography from South Laguna, California. Since the 1970s, when she campaigned against the California Proposition 6 Briggs Initiative, she has remained politically active, particularly in regards to anti-discrimination based on gender and sexuality. She was an active member of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and both attended and led numerous workshops at various conferences. She was especially active in raising awareness of the Californian Assembly Bill AB 537, the California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act of 2000, that changed California's education code by adding sexual orientation and gender to the nondiscrimination policy.
