Administrative History

The North American Conference of Homophile Organizations (NACHO) was an annual conference of independent gay and lesbian rights organizations "to discuss, plan and coordinate, as well as implement strategy and tactics in the fight to improve the status of the homosexual as a homosexual." Between 1966 and 1970, NACHO served as a clearing house for communication between gay organizations; provided guidance for founding new groups around the country; established a legal defense fund; and issued position papers on a range of gay and lesbian civil rights issues. Conflict between radical activists and more conservative members of NACHO at its 1970 conference in San Francisco led to the collapse of the organization.
