Scope and Content

Pamphlets, flyers, correspondence, media releases, articles, convention publicity, annual reports, membership forms, publication lists, conference registration lists, memoranda, project proposals, and reports documenting activities of the Gay and Lesbian Press Association (GLPA), 1980-1987. The GLPA was founded in 1981 as "a professional trade organization devoted to the betterment of all the gay/lesbian press media and the people who are responsible for the very existence of a gay press." The collection documents conferences, award ceremonies, administrative functions, and initiatives undertaken by the GLPA, including efforts to develop a computerized network in order to improve communication between gay and lesbian journalists.

Historical Note

The Gay and Lesbian Press Association was founded in 1981 as a national professional association advocating for the interests of gay and lesbian journalists and gay- and lesbian-oriented publications. The GLPA served as "a professional trade organization devoted to the betterment of all the gay/lesbian press media and the people who are responsible for the very existence of a gay press... to ensure and promote ethical journalistic standards among its members; to increase understanding and communication within the gay and lesbian community and with the community at large; to promote a healthy business environment; to foster the growth and development of the gay press media; and to protect and defend the rights and integrity of the gay press media." The GLPA held annual conferences and award ceremonies during the 1980s; it was also engaged in efforts to develop an efficient electronic communication system linking gay journalists and news organizations.
