The theater has been in continuous operation since its first production in Jim Kepner's National Gay Archives located on North Hudson Street in Hollywood. The theater later rented space in the Scorpio Theatre on Hoover Street in the Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles before moving to a West Hollywood-adjacent location on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Abstract

Early executive committee minutes, performance budgets, programs, flyers, press kits, photographs, correspondence, and newspaper clippings, including reviews, documenting the activities of the Celebration Theatre, 1982-2006. The collection consists of materials from the collections of Jim Kepner, the first Vice Chairman, of Robert Schrock, a former artistic director, and of the Purple Circuit, an information clearinghouse for gay and lesbian theater, founded by Bill Kaiser.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into three series: Administrative Records, Theatrical Performances, and Memorabilia. The arrangement of the administrative records reflects the order in which they were found. The theatrical performance files are arranged alphabetically by play or performance title. The documents of multiple short plays or one-acts performed as a show are arranged alphabetically under the performance title followed by a list of the individual plays and playwrights.

Acquisition Information

Records collected by Bill Kaiser and from the collections of Jim Kepner and Robert Schrock.

Processing Information

The collection was formerly housed in box 103-006, in folders of the Performing Arts Collection (Coll2007-016), and in the collection Robert Schrock. Collection processed by Michael C. Oliveira, with the assistance of Jim D. Deaton and Sócrates Silva, in December 2007; in February 2008, materials relating to the Celebration Theatre reclaimed from the Gay & Lesbian Drama Scripts Collection (Coll2008-003) and returned to the Celebration Theatre collection.

Collection was transferred to records boxes and finding aid revised during July 2008.

Processing this collection has been funded by a generous grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.
