Scope and Contents
This collection comprises video recordings (1979-2005) from filmmaker and attorney, Karen Peper, documenting a variety of LGBT-related events from the 1980s to the early 2000s, particularly LGBT community activities in Michigan. The collection includes footage from the Marches on Washington for LGBT rights, Gay Games events, the national tour of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, lesbian weddings, protest demonstrations, pride parades, and other events. Notably, the materials highlight the history of LGBT communities in Michigan, in places such as Detroit, Lansing, Ferndale, Belleville, Royal Oak, and Huron Township, among others. Topics documented in this collection include the groundbreaking for the Affirmations LGBT community center, lesbian weddings, women's music concerts, Metropolitan Community Church activities, the 1992 murder of lesbian couple Susan Pittmann and Christine Puckett, and 1991 demonstrations protesting discriminatory practices at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Belleville, MI.
