Scope and Contents

The series comprises the photographs taken by and of Christian William Miller, his friends, and family, 1886-1981. The photographs arranged by format include 2.25 x 2.5 inch prints and negatives, negative and contact strips, 35mm slides, color prints and negatives, glass negatives, and cased photographs. The photographs arranged by geographic region and topic are primarily black and white prints, but also include negatives, contact strips and sheets, and color photographs. The photograph albums and books mostly contain photographic prints, but also include correspondence, clippings, diary entries, and other sundry documents. The photograph descriptions comprise the original information included with the boxes, photograph rolls, negatives sleeves, and individual photographs that previously housed and/or were separated from the photographs listed in this series.

The photographs include images of Miller's relatives dating back to 1886; his infancy, childhood, and teenage years; his military service, design work, and modeling career; his travels around the world; gatherings of friends and families; nudes; and his artwork and the artwork of others. Included are images of Gore Vidal, Monroe Wheeler, Glenway Wescott, Somerset Maugham, and Alfred Kinsey's house.
