Administrative history

The travel service of ONE Inc. conducted educational tours to Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia. Although the function of providing educational travel tours to the gay and lesbian community continued unchanged from the first scheduled tour in 1961 to the last in 1984, the service was never identified as an independent division of ONE Inc. Initially slated as a function of the Social Services division, 1964-1965, the travel service was moved under the auspices of the Friends of ONE in 1966 and given the name ONE Overseas. In 1967 it was renamed ONE’s Tour Program, and after skipping a year in 1969, renamed again as ONE Tours. In 1975 the travel service was retitled the ONE World Travel Club which remained until its last tour in 1984.

The first planned tour in 1961 was cancelled due to a dispute with Continental Travel (see ONE, Inc. vs. Continental Travel under the administrative records series). The first successful tour was not until 1964 and comprised a three-week European excursion put together by Chet Sampson. Often the tours met up with internationally-based gay-activist organizations as well as activist organizations in departure and arrival cities in the United States. In 1972 Pat Rocco filmed ONE Adventure, a ONE tour documentary that played across the United States and Europe. That same year, Troy Perry accompanied the tour to develop interest in the establishment of Metropolitan Community Church congregations in Europe.
