Education Division records, 1907-1994, bulk: 1953 - 1994

 Series
Identifier: Series 5.

Scope and Contents

The records document the activities of the Education Division of ONE Inc., 1907-1994, bulk 1953-1994. The majority of the records center on the ONE Institute of Homophile Studies, 1955-1994, reflecting its dominant role not only in the Education Division, but within ONE Inc. The Midwinter Institute is documented from the first event in 1955 until the final banquet in 1982. Lectures consist of both the records of the Educational Division's lecture series starting in 1956 as well as documentation of ONE Inc. staff's outreach into the community. Extension classes, a prominent element of the education division in the late 1950s and 1960s, are documented in the general files of this series; the satellite offices series; the events, conferences, and committees section of the administrative records series; and in the promotional materials section of the publications series.

Administrative history

On October 15, 1954, the ONE Inc. board voted that there be "a series of forums... dealing with scientific, philosophical, legal, and social questions pertaining to homosexuality." The result was the Midwinter Institute of January 1955, the first of nineteen annual institutes and banquets offered between 1955 and 1982.

The success of the first Midwinter Institute encouraged the newly formed Education Division to develop a curriculum for an academic institution devoted to the specialized study of homosexuality. Initially the graduate program aimed to train homosexuality specialists and counselors, but after a review in 1956 by an Education Planning Committee (W. Dorr Legg, Merritt Thompson, Jim Kepner, and Julian Underwood), it was recommend that the school take a broader approach devoted to the general study of homosexuality and related socio-sexual issues.

The ONE Institute of Homophile Studies opened its doors in October 22, 1956, to staff members of ONE Inc. The sessions focused on surveying the attitudes and positions of biology, history, psychology, sociology, law, religion, literature, and philosophy relative to homosexuality. In 1957 the resulting class, "An Introduction to Homophile Studies," officially opened to all interested students. "The Homophile in History" course was added later that academic year, creating the two fundamental courses of the new academic program.

To expand its reach ONE Institute offered extension courses in Chicago (1963 and 1971), Denver (1959), Long Beach (1971 and 1973), New York (1966), and San Francisco (1957 and 1960). ONE Institute developed a public lecture series in 1956 and offered extension lectures across the country. ONE Institute staff contributed to outside committees, events, classes, and conferences, and offered academic counseling to undergraduate, masters, and doctoral candidate students in over 100 universities.

In 1981 the California State Department of Education officially certified ONE Institute of Homophile Studies as an advanced-degree program. An Academic Council was created to operate the school. Although the accreditation eventually lapsed, ONE Institute continued to offer classes and "degrees" until W. Dorr Legg's death in 1994.
