Publications Division records, 1946-1994, bulk: 1953 - 1994

 Series
Identifier: Series 4.

Scope and Contents

The records, 1946-1994, document the administration, production, circulation, advertising, copyright, and sales of serial and book publications at ONE Inc. from 1953 to 1994. Although the Publications Division was not officially established until the mid-1950s, the activity of publishing dates to the first publication of ONE Magazine in January 1953. The Publications Division dissolved as an independent department in the late 1970s, but the functions of this division, such as the publication of ONE Letter and ONE Calendar, were nonetheless maintained.

While the Homophile Studies in Theory and Practice publication was in part published by ONE Institute Press, a department created just for this purpose, the function of publishing a book has merited its inclusion in this series. Similarly, although book service orders were for a time handled by the Book Service Department and although the library later took over publication orders for ONE Inc., publications ordered by and from ONE Inc. have been collocated under this function of the Publications Division.

The actual published works of ONE Inc. will be found under the publications series. The records of published research projects such as "A Study of 388 North American Homosexual Males" and An Annotated Bibliography of Homosexuality will be found in the Research Division records series.

Administrative history

ONE Inc.'s original articles of incorporation cited as its primary purpose "to publish and disseminate a magazine dealing primarily with homosexuality from a scientific, historical and critical point of view." Under "General Purposes" the articles of incorporation continued that ONE Inc. would "publish and disseminate magazines, brochures, leaflets, and books pertaining to socio-sexual behavior." This formed the foundation of what was to become the Publications Division and established a core corporate function maintained long after the division ceased.
