Correspondence and membership records (A-Z), 1953-1994

 unspecified
Identifier: Series 3.

Scope and Contents

The records primarily document the membership records and publication orders of ONE Inc., 1953-1974. To a lesser extent, the records also include correspondence covering all activities and divsions of ONE Inc., 1953-1994. The people and institutions covered include Alfred Kinsey, Eric Julber, Michael Lombardi, Blanche Baker, Christopher Isherwood, Morris Kight, Dale Jennings, Evelyn Hooker, Bruce Hopping, Henry Glazier, Paul Goldman, Antony Grey, Barbara Grier, Hal Call, Thomas Coleman, Jean Cordova, Donald Webster Cory, Elver Barker, JJ Bellanger, Harry Benjamin, Troy Perry, Eddie Sandifer, Merrit Thompson, James Osgood, James Booker, William J. Barclay, John Burnside, Albert Ellis, James Eggeling, Henry Gerber, Thane Walker, Tony Seguro, Frank Kameny, Stella Rush, Jim Egan, Kirby Congdon, Thane Walker, Harry Hay, Charles Rowland, George Sylvester Viereck, Del Martin, Joan Corbin, Janus Society, Der Kreis, Vennon, National League for Social Understanding, and Playboy among others.

Note that the generic A, B, C... folders contain extensive correspondence from 1953 and especially 1964. The high volume of magazine requests from 1964 may be in part due to the 1964 Life magazine issue on the gay community and its mention of ONE Inc.

The W.S. Robin file contains a ONE Magazine envelop returned as undeliverable to ONE Inc. with the stamp "Refused at Customs" and the script "Prohibited." The Robert Dulane file contains a ONE Magazine envelop returned as undeliverable to ONE Inc. with the stamp "Mail returned by direction of Court appointed Receiver." The Lois Mercer file contains the Pioneer Award certificate she was awarded by ONE Inc. The Samuel O. Davis file documents a 1960s company advertising gay pornography, then scamming its customers.

The alphabetical maintenance of membership and subscription files seems to have largely ended in 1974, roughly corresponding to the end of the internationally distributed ONE Institute Quarterly in 1970 and ONE Magazine in 1972. It is unknown how membership and mailing lists were maintained after 1974 except that the reduction in distributed materials and incoming reader correspondence may not have required an extensive alphabetical system to manage.
