Series Scope and Content Summary

From the Series:

This series documents the circumstances surrounding a full-page advertisement placed by Dignity in the April 27, 1987, issue of Newsweek magazine at a cost of $25,289.41, in response to the Vatican's October 30, 1986, letter on homosexuality that prohibited Dignity chapters from meeting or celebrating mass on any church property. The materials include correspondence with Newsweek, and with Time magazine, which refused to publish the advertisement. The advertisement elicited considerable response. Many of the supportive replies were accompanied by donations; many of the unfavorable replies, written on clippings of the advertisement itself, are homophobic and full of profanity and sexual epithets.
