Subseries Scope and Content Summary

From the Sub-Series:

This subsubseries comprises the correspondence of Joseph Killian, the first acting chairman and president of Dignity. As a principal founder of Dignity, Killian maintained an extensive international correspondence. Topics include administrative matters, new chapter formation, and information requests from the general public and from scholars and students researching homosexuality and the Roman Catholic Church. A significant portion of the correspondence with private individuals is of a personal nature, offering support, advice, and personal stories of the dynamics and complexities of being gay and Roman Catholic. The Correspondence with Clergy files contain Killian's correspondence with gay and gay-supportive priests and clergymen of other denominations. The Personal files contain personal materials relating to Killian, including his diary, speeches on the history of Dignity, and the order of service for his funeral mass. The documents are arranged alphabetically by last name, when known; correspondence with individuals whose last name is not known is interfiled using the first name. Killian's correspondence relating to prison reform can be found in Subsubseries 4.4.4: Subject files, "Prison".
