Users wishing to request access to the audio only and audiovisual works should email music@usc.edu.

Conditions Governing Use

When the Los Angeles Master Chorale donated its records to the USC Libraries, LAMC did not transfer any intellectual property rights (e.g., copyrights, trademarks, rights of publicity, etc.) to the USC Libraries for any physical materials or digital files, and such intellectual property is reserved by their respective owners, whether the Los Angeles Master Chorale or a third party. Any type of use that would require these kinds of rights would be subject to users obtaining necessary licenses and permissions from all applicable parties. Any right of publication or commercial or promotional use for music and arts activities of any part of the collection is solely reserved by the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

The audio only and audiovisual works in the collection are bound by union agreements with the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) and the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) and thus carry additional restrictions governing their access and use. Contact music@usc.edu for more information regarding the collection's use restrictions.

Biographical / Historical

The Los Angeles Master Chorale Association (LAMCA) is a California non-profit arts organization. The Los Angeles Master Chorale was founded and incorporated in conjunction with the professional choir the Los Angeles Master Chorale and Sinfonia Orchestra, in 1964 by Roger Wagner, his attorney and several associates. The Los Angeles Master Chorale and Sinfonia Orchestra was one of the founding Resident Companies of the Music Center since 1964, along with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and the Civic Light Opera. The Master Chorale presented its first concert season at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in 1964-1965, receiving critical acclaim.

The LAMCA board of directors was initially organized by Z. Wayne Griffin, president of the Southern California Symphony Association (now the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association) and the Hollywood Bowl Association, enlisting the Music and Fine Arts Committee of the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce to direct the organization in 1964. In the early days of the LAMCA, then known as the Southern California Choral Music Association until 1976, the board of directors sought funding from philanthropist donors such as Louis D. Statham, a medical instrument manufacturer. The Music Center’s resident companies were funded individually until the establishment of the Music Center Unified Fund (MCUF) by Music Center president Dorothy Buffum Chandler. With the creation of the fund, the Performing Arts Council would manage and consolidate the funds for all resident companies. In time, the resident companies became more financially independent from the MCUF despite their limited development staffing. The Music Center Foundation came into being in 1973, which enabled the resident companies to establish endowments with respective board members represented on the fund’s board of directors.

Roger Wagner, a world renown choral conductor, served as Music Director of the 125-voice ensemble until 1986, and as Music Director Laureate until his death in 1992. Wagner’s position was followed by John Currie, who led the Master Chorale from 1986 to 1991, and Paul Salamunovich, from 1991 to 2001. Grant Gershon began his tenure as Music Director in 2001, during which the Master Chorale became a resident company of the Walt Disney Concert Hall on October 3, 2003.

Since 1980, the Master Chorale has operated education and community outreach programs such as the Los Angeles Master Chorale Chamber Singers, the annual High School Choir Festival, the College Choir Festival, Voices Within, a 10-week in-school artist-in-residency program targeted at 5th and 6th graders, the Oratorio Project, a high school immersion program which allows students to produce complex choral works, in-school performance assemblies by the Master Chorale Chamber Singers, masterclasses, invitational dress rehearsals and professional development workshops.

Custodial History

The Los Angeles Master Chorale records were under held in various locations since 1965. In 1993, with the guidance of their History Committee and general manager Maurice Staples, the Los Angeles Master Chorale Association decided to investigate gaps in their records and historical memorabilia by hiring a project archivist to collect materials from the Music Center Archives and other storage sites at the Music Center in order to catalog their archival records and current administrative records. This project prompted the collection of any documentation or ephemera related to its history. According to the custodial history provided in the Music Center Records finding aid at UCLA Special Collections, some records were located in the Ahmanson Annex in the Music Center Archives under the custody of Kenn Randall and Norman Macdonald. They were followed by Joe Pritkin from 1970-1990, Molly Paradiso in 1990, and Julio Cesar Gonzalez from 1993 until his retirement on September 1, 2017. The Master Chorale Chief Executive Officer Jean Davidson decided to retain Master Chorale records from the Music Center Records donation to UCLA Library Special Collections. The records were then transferred to Carol Zamora of the Music Center in 2018 for return to the Master Chorale. From 2018 to 2024, the records were held in staff offices at the Music Center and in an off-site storage facility. In 2024, the USC Libraries acquired the collection.

Separated Materials

Material that was originally housed in boxes numbered 18, 19, and 22 through 32 were retained by the Los Angeles Master Chorale. The USC Libraries do not hold the material housed in the separated boxes. The boxes acquired by USC were not renumbered to fill the gaps created by the separated boxes. As a result, the gaps in the collection's box numbering remain.

Processing Information

The collection was processed at the box level and the original arrangement and folder titles were retained in most cases. Exceptions include audiovisual materials, photographs, ephemera, some administrative records, and press clippings, which were rehoused into appropriate containers and arranged chronologically. The collection was processed onsite at the Los Angeles Master Chorale offices at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion by project archivists Zachary Rutland and Dylan Karlsson in 2020-2021 under the management of Paroo, information management consultancy. After the USC Libraries acquired the collection in 2024, Bo Doub, Accessioning Archivist, migrated various collection descriptions created by Paroo into the USC Libraries' systems.
