Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Saidee Pettus Hoose papers, 1923-2009 (bulk 1930-1939), consist of fourteen folders relating to Hoose, her husband Earl, and their family. Amongst these materials is correspondence with various family members and friends during the time of Saidee and Earl's missionary fieldwork in China as well as Earl's appointment with the American Bible Society, including correspondence with Minnie Evans Keyes of the General Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. There is also correspondence to USC from Hoose's family members, providing biographical information of her family tree and history.

The rest of the collection comprises newspaper clippings, mainly from "The Peiping Chronicle", a few postcards and invitations, a copy of Harned Hoose's top-secret memo and outline of Chinese history for Richard Nixon in preparation of his historic China trip in 1972, and two pieces of ephemera in the form of chopsticks and Yuen.
