Scope and Contents

This collection consists of performing arts materials collected by American journalist Bernardine Szold-Fritz. Materials are primarily composed of clippings about the career of her daughter, theatre actress Rosemary Carver. Other items present include headshots of various actresses, Carver’s contracts, telegrams, photographs, and playbills, and a folder with writings on American dancer and choreographer Martha Graham. Headshots are inscribed to Edith Breckenridge. This collection was originally part of the Special Collections Performing Arts 100 series.

Biographical / Historical

Bernardine Szold-Fritz (1896-1982) was an American stage actress turned journalist and theatre producer. She lived in London and Paris and traveled extensively throughout India and China. She established the International Art Theater in Shanghai, China and was a Paris correspondent for The New Yorker before establishing her “Hollywood salon” which brought together leading literary and artistic personalities of the era.
