Scope and Contents

Collection consists of a photograph of American silent film star Laurette Taylor and published sheet music of “Who’ll Buy my Violets”, composed by E. Ray Goetz and José Padilla Sánchez, featuring Spanish singer Raquel Meller from Alexander Tiers’ personal collection.

Originally part of the Ethel Barrymore Memorial Theatre Arts Collection at the University of Southern California Library 100 Series, and was labeled 100-14 .

Biographical / Historical

Raquel Meller (1888-1962) was a Spanish theatrical singer, film star, and vaudeville performer in the 1920s and 1930s. She sang the original versions of well known songs such as “La Violetera” and “El relicario”, both written by José Padilla Sánchez.

Laurette Taylor (1883-1946) was an American stage and silent film star known for originating the role of Amanda Wingfield in the first production of Tennessee Williams’ play The Glass Menagerie (1944).
