Identifier: 2092

Scope and Contents

This collection contains photographs and production materials from film, television, and theater projects of German director John Brahm (1893-1982), dating from the 1920s to the 1960s and chiefly for American projects. There are some photographs and scripts from Brahm's early work in the German and Austrian theater in the 1920s and 1930s. Most film projects only have a few items such as production stills, behind-the-scenes photographs often of Brahms with cast and crew, or press clippings. There are scripts for the movies Counsel for Crime (incomplete), The Lodger, and The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima and television episode scripts from The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (Box 3). There are three books of production stills for Broken Blossoms, The Thief of Venice, and Special Delivery (Box 3). There is also a 3-tape oral history interview of Brahm from 1973 (Box 3).

Processing Information

Some processing by USC students in 2019 as part of the "Piloting a Shared Practice for Accessible Archival Descriptions" Dean's Challenge Grant. Additional arrangement and description by Diann Benti in 2021.

Processing Information

Some material may be missing. A published "Guide to the Archival Materials of German-speaking Emigration to the United States after 1933" (vol. 2) references "ca. 40 musical transcription discs from Brahm films" in their entry for the collection, which has not been located. An internal shelflist also reference an additional third box (prior to rehousing) that was not with the collection as of October 2021.
