The USC School of Music teaching subseries consists of Dahl's notes, teaching materials, examinations, grade sheets, student papers, clippings, programs, notebooks, musical scores, syllabi, correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, and forms, created or collected by Dahl in the course of his teaching activities.

The Notes series consists of the extensive notes Dahl took on a variety of topics, from teaching to travel. He would sometimes file these notes separately from related material. The notes in this series are distinct from the notes in the Compositions series. There is overlap with the Correspondence and Teaching series.
