Scope and Contents

Randall Henderson was a noted college basketball player for USC between 1909 and 1911. (He later became well-known for his environmental efforts concerning the deserts of Southern California, and published Desert Magazine.

This large fragile scrapbook was kept by Henderson during his USC years and is filled with photographs, newspaper clippings, theatre programs, money receipts (as for a boarding house), his university report cards, and other ephemera. Many of the photographs and clippings are of Henderson as a basketball player.

Biographical Note

Randall T. Henderson was a noted USC basketball player between 1907 and 1911, the time period covered by this large scrapbook. Upon graduating from USC in 1911, he became a sports writer for the Los Angeles Times and eventually ended up in Calexico, California where he became a partner in the Calexico Chronicle. He founded Desert Magazine in 1937 and later became a founding member of Desert Protective Council. Henderson authored several books in addition to his association with Desert Magazine. Though he was a star athlete during his days at USC, his legacy is greater known through his work as a desert conservationist and as a contributor to the formation of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park as well as the Joshua Tree National Monument.
