J.P. Widney papers and ephemera
Scope and Contents
This collection includes the cape/cloak, Stetson hat, a hymn book, and a book of unpublished poems belonging to J.P. Widney (1841-1938).
The cape is constructed of wool with a velvet collar with apparent wear on collar and hems. Stetson has a flat brim that slightly curves upward. Both articles are in good condition.
The hymn book contains handwritten doxologies for various Sunday services during 1916. Widney’s poem “The Hermit” is handwritten in a large volume. Poem includes annotations.

Biographical / Historical
Joseph Pomeroy Widney (1841-1938), was an American doctor, educator, historian, and Methodist pastor, and brother of Robert Maclay Widney. Widney served as a member of the University of Southern California’s Board of Trustees from 1880 to 1895 and was the second president of the university. He also was the founding dean of its school of medicine.

Abstract
This collection includes the cape/cloak, Stetson hat, a hymn book, and a book of unpublished poems belonging to J.P. Widney (1841-1938).
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The cape and stetson were donated by the Widney family, September 5, 2014, on the occasion of the dedication of the Judge Robert M. Widney statue on the USC campus. The poem was given by Widney’s estate in 1939.
