Louis Wann was an American writer as well as a long-time professor of English language and literature at the University of Southern California. Returning to the United States in 1911, Wann earned his master's in English at Columbia University the following year. He then traveled to Germany where he taught English at Heidelberg University for two years. There he met and married his wife, Irina Neff. In 1914 they returned to the United States where Wann taught at the University of Wisconsin as well as at Lawrence College (also in Wisconsin). Wann then began his long career at the University of Southern California (1919-1951)during part of which time he was chairman of the English department. After 1951, Wann continued at USC as emeritus Professor of English until his death in 1956.

During his life, Louis Mann authored a number of scholarly publications including The Rise of Realism: American Literature from 1860 to 1900, Century Readings in the English Essay, and The Oriental in Elizabethan Drama, among many other works.

The eight journals in this small collection provide a detailed account of Mann's three years (1908-1911) spent teaching, studying, and traveling through Europe and parts of the Middle East. They include his experiences in Constantinople (now Istanbul), as well as Switzerland, Germany, France, England, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt.
