This collection consists of the founding documents associated with The Alfred E. Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern California (AMI-USC). Materials include correspondence, publications, and drafts of the Affiliation Agreement that formed the non-profit research institute under USC President Sample’s leadership in 1998.

Biographical / Historical

Alfred E. Mann was an American inventor and entrepreneur who specialized in medical devices. Through his supporting organization, The Alfred Mann Foundation, he started research institutes at USC, Purdue University, and the Israel Institute of Technology. Mann was also a Life Trustee at USC.

According to the Affiliation Agreement, The Alfred E. Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern California was formed as a non-profit research institute to engage in biomedical research to foster the development of medical devices with the ultimate goal of improving human health and wellbeing.
