Scope and Contents

The two boxes of records contain the Minutes (later called the Journal) of the annual Southern California Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in published form. Box 1 covers the period from 1879 through 1917; Box 2 covers 1918 through 1938. By 1915, the publications were referred to as journals rather than minutes. Many of the conference records have been digitized by the Church: http://www.calpacumc.org/archiveshistory/.

HIstorical note

USC's founding is tied to the Methodist Church; it's first president, Marion M. Bovard, was the Secretary of the United Methodist Church Southern California Conference. The University severed its ties with the Church in 1952.
