Biographical / Historical

Joan M. Schaefer (1921-2017) was Dean of Women 1955-1992 within the USC Office of Student Affairs. Known as “Dean Joan,” she was described as a beacon for students seeking advice, a listening ear and a genuine friend. Schaefer had an open-door policy, and welcomed walk-ins from all students, including many men.
