Church of Scientology publications, correspondence, and other material
Scope and Contents
A collection of printed and manuscript materials gathered and written by an unidentified New York woman in her early twenties while she was exploring the Church of Scientology during the 1960s. The collection includes 18 printed publications, 13 mimeographed policy letters and other memoranda from the Hubbard Communications Office, three completed "Personality Analysis" self evaluations, a two-page typed manuscript describing the woman's "gains from first auditing intensive," a typed and mimeographed testimonial letter she wrote describing how Scientology changed her life for the better, a nine-page handwritten manuscript--apparently an assignment--describing her first several "assists," and more than 60 pages of her handwritten notes on Scientology texts and coursework. The printed publications include several issues of the official newsletters Ability (published in Washington, D.C., with most or all text by L. Ron Hubbard) and The Auditor (published at Saint Hill Manor in England), as well as a Scientology Training Course Manual and a packet of materials advertising a new series of training courses titled "The Route to Total Power." The identity of the woman who created and compiled the material in this collection is unknown. The woman's name was redacted (crossed out) from all documents that identified her. The documents were redacted prior to the USC Libraries' acquisition of the collection.
