Patt Morrison collection of Los Angeles memorabilia

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: 7113

Scope and Contents

A collection of five board games, nine cans of "smog," two buttons and a t-shirt relating to the 1984 Summer Olympics, a Southern California "powdered smog" postcard, a dish towel, a bumper sticker, and a button relating to the fruit fly (Medfly) crisis in California during the early 1980s collected by journalist, author, and radio and television personality Patt Morrison. Most of the items in the collection relate to Los Angeles smog and air pollution, but a few of the items relate to the Medfly crisis during the governorship of Jerry Brown, as well as to Los Angeles generally. The collection's board games include two copies of the board game titled "Smog: The Air Pollution Game" made by Urban Systems, Inc., the Los Angeles Edition of the Monopoly board game, and a bespoke “The Medfly Game” created by artist Chris Norby. The "smog in a can" items include cans of "smog" with various colorful labels: "Genuine Los Angeles Smog," "Vintage Quality Certified Smog," and "Pure Northern California Air." The t-shirt and one of the buttons feature art by Lazar Lou showing an athlete wearing a gas mask running in the Olympic torch relay trailing a dark cloud of smog. “The Medfly Game” box has an image of California Governor Jerry Brown chasing a fruit fly with a fly swatter.
