Scope and Contents
The Sanville Institute for Clinical Social Work (formerly the California Institute for Clinical Social Work) was a non-profit educational organization dedicated to deepening the practice and values of the social work profession among practitioners and the public. From 1974 to 2018 the Institute operated a state-approved graduate program in California, offering a PhD in clinical social work. The Sanville Institute records consist of documents relating to the organization's early history, faculty, curricula, alumni, services, state approval, and its Board of Trustees. The collection contains correspondence, oral histories, photographs, memorabilia, meeting minutes, faculty governance documents, newsletters, brochures, student-faculty handbooks, alumni surveys, writings by Jean Sanville, and other material. The collection also includes Judith Kay Nelson's research files on crying and attachment theory. Nelson was a Sanville Institute graduate, faculty member, and dean emeritus. Lastly, the collection holds an external hard drive containing 223 gigabytes of the Sanville Institute's digital files. The digital files include text, images, audio, video, and presentation files.
