Biographical Note
Walter F. Lindley (January 13, 1852- January 24, 1922) was born in Monrovia, Indiana. He earned his MD from Long Island College in Brooklyn, New York, in 1875, and moved to Los Angeles to begin his medical practice later that year. During his term as Los Angeles County Health Officer (1878-1879), he helped to develop a free vaccination program for children attending public schools, and established a system of registering births and deaths. He was appointed Health Officer of the City of Los Angeles in 1879, and became superintendent of the Los Angeles County Hospital in 1885. He is also known for establishing the Whittier State School, the Los Angeles Orphans’ Home, and the California Hospital.
Lindley is recognized as one of the founders of the College of Medicine of the University of Southern California, and served as its Dean from 1903-1906.
