Abstract

The Yeghiayan Law Firm records on the Marootian v. New York Life Insurance class action lawsuit contain claimant files and documents submitted to the court as part of the class action lawsuit, filed in 1999 and settled in 2004, brought against the New York Life Insurance Company for unpaid life insurance benefits. The plaintiffs in this case consist of descendants of New York Life Insurance policyholders who were killed during the Armenian Genocide (1914-1923). The plaintiffs' co-counsel in this case, Vartkes Yeghiayan of Yeghiayan & Associates Law Firm, donated the firm's records relating to the New York Life Insurance lawsuit. The bulk of the Yeghiayan Law Firm records consist of the law firm's files on claimants involved in the lawsuit, with application forms and supplementary documents establishing familial ties to New York Life Insurance policyholders living in the Ottoman Empire during the years of the Genocide. The collection also contains documents submitted to the court during the course of the lawsuit, including motions, briefs, proposed orders, amicus curiae, lists of New York Life Insurance clients and insurance policies, and copies of potentially relevant historical and government documents reproduced from originals dating back to 1902.
