Scope and Contents

The Nicholas Beck collection on Budd Schulberg consists of material relating to Budd Schulberg (1914-2009)--the American screenwriter, television producer, and novelist--collected by Nicholas Beck (1932-2017). The collection includes material on Budd Schulberg's life, family, and works; the Watts Writers Workshop -- a creative writing group initiated by Budd Schulberg following the 1965 Watts Riots; correspondence between Beck and Schulberg's extended family; archival documents by and about Budd's father, studio executive B. P. Schulberg; and material on Hollywood history and Schulberg's contacts in and outside of the film industry, including F. Scott Fitzgerald. The collection also holds material relating to Nicholas Beck's life and works, including notes and drafts of Beck's book Budd Schulberg: A Bio-bibliography, published in 2001. Nicholas (Nick) Beck was a graduate of Los Angeles City College and UCLA; professor at California State University, Los Angeles; sports writer; book and Hollywood memorabilia collector; and Budd Schulberg's biographer and bibliographer. Types of documents found in the collection include correspondence, photographs, manuscripts, notes and research, published material, film posters, moving images, audio recordings, and memorabilia.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Gift of Nicholas Patrick Beck estate, May 4, 2017.

Separated Materials

Most of the published works included in the 2017 gift of the Beck estate were separated from the archival collection and cataloged individually. The cataloged books are available via the main USC Libraries catalog search.

Processing Information

Beck previously stored the bulk of the collection in binders, which he had labeled. During processing, the original binders were removed with their labels transcribed to acid-free folders.
