Biographical / Historical

CCS' Big Canyon Creek Restoration Project plan successfully brought together federal, state, regional and local agencies, homeowners and local community organizations. The plan dealt with water contamination, habitat restoration, flood damage, dredge spoils and public access. The plan focused on restoring tidal influence for the 70-acre Big Canyon, and laid the critical foundation for restoration efforts still underway today (as of 2022), led by the City of Newport Beach with funding from the California Coastal Conservancy.

Upper Newport Bay is one of the highest quality coastal wetlands in Southern California. Big Canyon Creek is located withing the Upper Newport Bay State Ecological Reserve, and flows into Orange County’s Upper Newport Bay. This is one of the most heavily-visited areas in Upper Newport Bay. The Big Canyon Creek Restoration Project planned to restore the natural transition between woodlands, freshwater marsh, salt marsh, mudflats and Upper Newport Bay's open water channels.

Funded by California Coastal Conservancy, Southern California Wetlands Recovery Project, City of Newport Beach, Community Conservancy International and Newport Bay Naturalists and Friends.
