The Magician, by Chagall: inquiries and related correspondence, 1964 - 1965
Scope and Contents
Correspondence between Gerhard and Franz Mayer, director of the Kunstmuseum Basel and son-in-law to Marc Chagall (husband of his daughter Ida), regarding a drawing Gerhard was shown by an American collector. The drawing is part of the illustrations Chagall did for Peretz's book, "The Magician." Gerhard asks if this is one of the original illustrations (which were supposedly left behind in Russia) or if it is an unpublished or later-published illustration. Meyer responds in a letter dated March 5 (included) that he phoned Chagall and quotes Chagall's response. He also relates information about Ida, Chagall's daughter's, health.; A letter from Valentina Chagall in response to a letter (not included here) from Gerhard inquiring about the drawing. Valentina's letter relates some information about the drawing and also informs Gerhard of Marc's and her plans to travel to Jerusalem for the new year to see the opening of the Chagall stained glass windows at the Hebrew University Medical Campus Synogogue. She also mentions a trip to Paris regarding Chagall's stained glass windows for the Metz Cathedral.; a receipt from Estella Katzenellenbogen, which confirms that Gerhard returned the abovementioned drawing to her in 1965.; A receipt for framing of the drawing, dated February 13, 1964.; A photograph of the drawing.
