Scope and Contents

The Leadership Institute Series consists of materials pertaining to Bennis’ role as founding chairman of the USC Marshall School's Leadership Institute. Types of materials include financial reports, budgeting and funding information, grant proposals, board meetings, awards, and evaluations mostly related to the development of the USC Presidential Fellows program. This series also includes correspondence, mostly between Warren Bennis, James O’Toole and the Kellogg Foundation, as well as class profiles and biographies on past Leadership Institute Presidential Fellows.

Biographical / Historical

The USC Marshall School’s Leadership Institute was founded in 1990 by Warren Bennis and supported by a three-year start-up grant from the Lord Foundation of California. The Institute’s mission is to prepare future generations for the business and public sectors through real-world training. In 1993, the President Steven B. Sample Fellows Program was founded with a grant to the Leadership Institute from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The program’s purpose is to train graduate students to become leaders in their profession and communities.
