Scope and Contents

This is a collection of newspaper clippings and photocopies of newspaper stories. The headlines, subheadings, and authors are as follows: -The first document is a photocopy of a stories from the “Los Angeles Times”: “Blacks Feel Brunt of the Drug War” by Ron Harris (Times Staff Writer) “Blacks: Is the U.S. War on Drugs Redefining Constitutional Rights?” “Blacks: Minorities Major Targets in the War on Drugs” -There are 2 small photocopied stories detailing drug abuse in Liverpool: “Drug Abuse in Wirral among worst in the UK” by Peter Davenport “Times” dated 23/1/86. “Liverpool, a city in disarray: 3” “Dole frustration and drug abuse linked” by Davenport dated 14/8/85 -Newspaper clipping from the “Los Angeles Times”: “Drugs, Abuse Common Link of Jail Inmates, Study Finds” by George Lardner JR. -There are 2 photocopied stories detailing the raid of the Broadwater Farm estate: “The real cause of terror in Broadwater Farm” from Commander David Stevens “Police Raid on the Broadwater Farm estate” from Mr. Millard Scott and Mr. Shaun Waterman -Newspaper clipping from the “Los Angeles Times”: “Sheriff’s Officials Return Pot to Woman Arrested for Possession” dated 10/25/00. -Photocopied story from the “Los Angeles Times”: “Reno Seals Report on CIA-Crack Claims” dated January 24, 1998. -Photocopied story: “Maxine Waters Takes Stand!” by Jeffrey Steinberg. Maxine Waters was the Congresswoman for the 35th district in California. -Photocopied stories from the “National Report”: -“Targeting blacks for addiction and crack sales” “Cocaine: The Johnny Appleseed of Calif. Trafficking had cozy relation with U.S.”| “Crack: Trio created market” “How trio made crack into a mass market” “CIA: Effort to help Contras by inner-city drug dealing began with Somoza’s fall.” “CRACK: Did CIA approve sales in L.A.?” “Crack linked to CIA” all by Gary Webb of the “San Jose Mercury News” dated August 23, 1996 -This is a Xeroxed copy of a 3 part series of stories by Gary Webb on the role of Crack in funding the Nicaraguan War. The “Special Report” details the “key players” in the crack trade’s involvement with the war including: “Freeway” Rick Ross, Danilo Blandon, Norwin Meneses etc. The Xerox also includes other stories that Gary Webb wrote on the subject. -Photocopied political cartoon and story by Jonathan Rosen in “The Progressive.” The cartoon details the sale of drugs by an undercover cop and the arrest and persecution of the buyer. -Photocopied OP-ED in the “L.A. Watts Times” by E.F. Mohammed Martinez titled: “The Foreign and Domestic Politics of Drugs” dated October 3, 1996. -Photocopied story: “4 alleged drug dealers still held” by G.M. Bush (staff writer) -Newspaper clipping from the “Los Angeles Times” titled: “Tracking the Genesis of the Crack Trade” dated October 20, 1996. Other stories from that copy of the Times: “Crack: Array of Dealers, Suppliers Fueled Epidemic,” “Crack: Dealers’ Agendas Driven by Changing Tastes, Economics,” and “CRACK: Tracking the Origins of an Urban Scourge” -Newspaper clippings from the “Los Angeles Times” dated October 21, 1996: “CRACK: Examining the Alleged Role of CIA in L.A. Drug Trade” “CRACK: The Controversial Aftermath of a Fallen Drug Ring” “Ex-Associates Doubt Onetime Drug Trafficker’s Claim of CIA Ties” by Victor Merina and William C. Rempel. “CRACK: Examining Charges of CIA Link”
