Scope and Content
The staff of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips extended its support to the Independent Commission by undertaking the following tasks: preparing and reviewing the recruitment/testing and academy/training chapters of the Commission report; presenting witnesses to the Commission; interviewing over 20 LAPD personnel of different departmental ranks; interviewing city staff and medical personnel; attending meetings with the Police Protective League; reviewing the background files of LAPD officers; attending numerous roll call training sessions and public meetings; researching and drafting legal memoranda in reference to labor issues arisen within the report; conducting general background research for the Commission; and attending two ride-alongs with the LAPD.
Materials in the series pertain to the firm’s work product, including interviews conducted with alleged victims of police brutality and with respected figures in the law enforcement field. Also contained in the series are statistics that show the passage rate of new recruits who took a mandated psychological evaluation upon employment. These statistics are compiled according to gender and race.
